The WICA came into existence in 1953 as a compact association of cinematographers to provide cinematographers with a common platform, where they could discuss their problems, exchanges views and generally be of help to each other. Shri Rajnikant C. Pandya suggested that the regional body be formed instead of an all-India body and hence named it Western India Cinematographer's Society.
